Digitmovies, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, presents the Volume XXVII of the series dedicated to the Italian Peplum by releasing, for the very first time on CD, the complete OST by Francesco De Masi for the movie “Maciste il gladiatore più forte del mondo” (aka “Colossus of the Arena”) directed in 1962 by Michele Lupo and starring Mark Forrest, Scilla Gabel, Erno Crisa, José Greci, Ciccio Barbi, Harold Bradley, Calisto Calisti, Puccio Ceccarelli, Jon Chevron, Maurizio Conti, Nino Di Napoli, Germano Longo, Carlo Pisacane, Franca Polesello, Vittorio Sanipoli, Dan Vadis. In the small kingdom of Mersabad a man named Oniris (Crisa), the leader of a group of conspirators, is preparing a coup. Oniris begins to take on gladiators as mercenaries to fight against the army of the kingdom; one of them is Maciste (Forrest), who gets hired to protect the princess Talima (Gabel). She is kidnapped, and Maciste is committed to free her. After her successful rescue, he begins to eliminate the conspirators, the last one of them being the powerful Oniris. At the end Maciste discovers that the sister of Talima was an accomplice of Oniris, he unmasks her and succeeds in putting the rightful king on the throne, that is the princess Talima. Francesco De Masi has written and conducted a symphonic score that appears for the first time ever on CD (the OST of “Maciste l’eroe più grande del mondo” by Maestro De Masi has already been issued as a complete edition, in stereo, by Digitmovies on CDDM 234). It comes from the mono master tapes of the original session and every note recorded at that time has been included here with a total time of 66:11. Francesco De Masi has composed a symphonic OST that contains all the typical elements of his recognizable style, thereby creating a memorable series of epic themes and romantic pieces which get alternated with violent, dramatic and mysterious ones. This CD wants to pay homage to the musical art of the great Maestro Francesco De Masi who is always so dear to the hearts of us film music fans and to the cinema of Michele Lupo.
