Digitmovies presents the ninth volume of the series dedicated the soundtracks of the Italian Peplum genre: for the first absolute time the complete OST by Carlo Innocenzi (Monteleone,1899 – Roma,1962) written for the movie “Il terrore dei barbari” (aka “Goliath and the barbarians”) directed in 1959 by Carlo Campogalliani and starring Steve Reeves as Emiliano, cuban actress/dancer Chelo Alonso as Landa, Andrea Checchi as Delfo, Landa’s father and Arturo Dominici as Svevo (the following year, both these actors worked in the cult movie “La maschera del demonio” (Aka "Black Sunday") of Mario Bava,. The movies tells about the invasion of Italy from Alboino and his army, faced by the muscleman Emiliano (Reeves). Among bloody battles there is also space for love due the fact that Emiliano falls in love with Landa (Alonso), daughter of Delfo (Checchi),the duke governor of the country who’ll lose his life to make the mighty young man free…Of this OST at that time no one note was released, but in Usa the American version distributed by Roger Corman’s AIP changed the music and prolific Les Baxter was engaged to write an alternate score. In those days the score of M° Baxter appeared on a stereophonic album titled “Barbarian” ( American International LP 1001) and later re-issued by Varese Sarabande Records nel 1979 (VC 81078). The music score by Baxter was conducted by noted Muir Mathieson, while the Italian score was conducted by unforgettable Franco Ferrara. This CD is possible again thanks the big help of C.A.M. in whose historic vaults the original mono master tapes are survived until today. Carlo Innocenzi has written a symphonic score introduced by the Main Theme, an epic march where brass and percussions play the marked motif (Tr.1), reprised in Tr.12, followed by dramatic and violent themes as underscore to the battles between the invaders and the italian defender (Tr.2,Tr.3,Tr.5,Tr.6,Tr.8,Tr.22). M°Innocenzi has written a sweet and exotic love theme for Emiliano and Landa, with an oriental flavour, introduced in Tr.7 and reprised in Tr.9,Tr.11,Tr.15,Tr.16. This OST contains also source music for the camp (Tr.13, Tr.18) and two memorable orchestral ballets for the sequence of Landa dancing (Tr.4, Tr.19). The author closes the score with “Finale” where for the last time in a glorious way the March and Love theme are reprised (Tr.23). As bonus track we include the alternate version of “Finale” without the introduction of the march. Another “Must” music rescue of the Italian Golden Age.
